Quick Update: Downtown Master Plan

The city, county, and DDI are preparing to update the downtown master plan. Information about this process seems to be tracking under the radar, but I confirmed that there are two public charrettes planned - One on April 28th and one on May 12th. The venue is yet to be determined, but mark your calendars. It's essential that there is good community participation in that process.

DDI is also doing an online survey of Durham residents' assessment of downtown, which isn't easily found. It seems to be located here:

That is a highly biased survey. I hope that all my comments at the very end were submitted! Wasn't the durham master plan just redone in the past few years with the plan to reopen the downtown streets to two-way traffic?

Yeah, it certainly is. Definitely designed to favor some answers - like public-private partnerships. Very little about infrastructure. I ignored some of the 'shinier' options to pick automobile dependence as a threat.

it's been quite a few years since i had to design an instrument to measure public opinion.

that one is not going to generate much in the way of valid data.

to add on to gary's comment, i also said that gentrification and lack of affordable housing downtown would be threats, in addition to automobile dependence and big-box retailing.
