Quick Update: Durham: A Self-Portrait
I received an email from one of the creators of the upcoming "Durham: A Self-Portrait" film, a documentary about Durham and Durham history, asking me to let readers know about it. I don't know much about the project personally, but I'm certainly happy to help out fellow Durham history fans.
The film premiere is Friday, Nov. 16th at the Carolina, and here is their website.

Speaking of updates, do you know what's happening with the bid process for the two city owned parcels of land in Cleveland-Holloway?
Michael
The intial round of bids were opened ~10 days ago. Scott Harmon/Susanna Dancy were the high bidders on both pieces of land. All of the bids will go before the city council at the 10/4 work session to be approved as 'qualifying'. My understanding is that this simply means that the bidders met the requirements for bidding (5% check, etc.) When approved, the 10-day upset period will start, and new bids can be put in, which need to exceed the current high bid by a certain amount (a split percentage). If no new bids are received, the initial high bid will 'win.' If new bids are received, at the end of the 10 days, the process repeats.
This is how I understand it, anyway.

Thanks, Gary -- That's excellent news that Scott and Susanna are in the lead at the moment. I have a faint amount of hope -- when I spoke at council, and directed my comments at the woman who heads Dominion Ministries (I forget her name -- April ... ?) and asked that they consider selling their existing parcel as well, she gave a small but definitely noticeable and deliberate nod. It could have been politeness, but I wondered if a) they might have actually been moved by the arguments against locating there, and b) seen that their piece might be worth enough that cashing out and going somewhere else was in their best financial interest.
