Close Seminary Street for Parking?
Kevin has a good piece up detailing the efforts of folks in the Tuscaloosa-Lakewood neighborhood to get the Triangle Y to stick around; in that piece, he conveys a line by the Triangle Y rep that they would like to get the city to close Seminary St. to expand parking for the Downtown Y.
I gagged on this line - evidently Barry did too - he put up a piece rebutting the idea that what we need downtown is more parking. Couldn't agree more. Hey, if you can't find a place to park at the Y, maybe you should get some exercise and ride your bike there. Or demand better bus service to downtown from your neighborhood.
But beyond this, I think the prospect of closing a street in downtown has the mark of serious backward thinking. Connectivity downtown is challenging enough without closing any streets - ever tried to travel from west to east on the north side of downtown? Seminary is one of your only options. I hope this was a throwaway line that, if pursued, gets kicked to the curb of Seminary St. without delay.

As a user of the downtown Y, I am very confused. Even if there is a full lot at the Y, there's always plenty of on street parking and, uh, there's another lot across from the Y lot, a big empty one.
Gary - what really stuck in my craw was the phrase "with the city's blessing."
Rereading Kevin's post, it's possible what he was saying is that the Y is seeking city approval to close Seminary; but i sure read it the first time as though the city had already said it was OK. The Y is free to ask for whatever they think is better for their facility. But the city's conflicting policies, in which alternative trasportation options are talked about ad nauseum, but all that ever gets done is increase the amount of parking spaces, need to brought under a more unified guideline.
The City has not blessed the proposal to close Seminary Street.

Gary -
To improve the longevity of the web you are helping to create (and I *know* you like structures built to last! ;-), it's better to link to the permalink on the target site (e.g. http://www.bullcityrising.com/2007/11/lakewood-y-spin.html), rather than the main page.
Cheers,
Toby
What do you take me for? A fool? We certainly have not "blessed" any proposals, nor will we, since any such "blessing" would be an obvious violation of the separation of church and state.
And I don't like your tone.
Toby
OK. Thanks for that.

I really hope you're not wearing a rubber body suit. Damnit, there I go with that tone again.

Damn, what about *my* tone? Am i chopped liver?
Or perhaps spleen? ;)

I certainly am wearing a rubber body suit. It's 100% natural, organic, biodegradable rubber grown by Vietnamese who are paid a living wage and it's imported according to Fair Trade practices. You got a problem with that, Gary? or Sven, or whatever you're calling yourself this week. Don't think I don't notice all the fake names on this blog. That wussy imposter who writes those sweet, liberal comments and calls himself "Mike Woodard" is definitely not my buddy, Woody. The real Woody is a mean SOB. In his younger years, Woody wore a mask and wrestled in the old NWA under the name Superstar #2. The point is: you keep pissing him off and he'll pile drive your skinny neck right through those hardwood floors you like so much. Not that I couldn't slap you around myself.
Ragin, of course you're chopped liver, minced liver, lily liver, whatever, so mind your own damn business. I'm the top vote-getter and I don't have to listen to you or Sven or that irritating little Michael Bacon. I helped take care of Tommy Stith with all of his tiresome questions, and I can take care of you too. I am Catwoman! Hear me hiss!
Hey! Don't call me little!
i will bet a week's pay that Catwoman is not Ms. Catotti.
while i don't care for anonymous commenters all that much, i really despise people pretending to be other people.
but this is Gary's place, not mine. what he chooses to do about it is up to him.
It's pushing it a bit, but I've only deleted one comment, one time, for an obvious, serious slur. Satire is hard to pull off well, but I think it is fairly obvious that "catwoman" is not Dianne Catotti. If I thought was difficult for people to perceive, I would take some action.
For the record, I'm highly tolerant, and perhaps encourage, mocking hypocrisy, political foolishness, imperious attitudes, and moralistic nonsense. Some people perceive this as "being negative" , and they generally aren't fans of this website. Others see it as a welcome honesty in contrast to the relentlessly upbeat. I don't discourage anonymous comments or whatever you want to call yourself, as long as what you say relates to the public sphere and the actions public figures take in the public sphere. If you are going to try satire, make it obvious - I know this is not necessarily good satire, but the internet is not a place of subtlety.
Personal attacks (as opposed to attack on political action or the public attitude/statements of public figures), obscenity, and racial/ethnic/sexual orientation slurs will not be tolerated and will be deleted faster than buy-a-condo-in-costa-rica comment spam.

Amen...see my rant over at Kevin's joint. Let's hope the Y Board reads this stuff and lets that idea die quickly without a funeral.

Oh, no. My past has caught up with me! My wussy, sweet, liberal cover has been blown. I just hope the pictures of me in my tights and mask have all been destroyed.
But I can still take you, Catwoman. Rowwrr!
