The Seventh Sign?

I noted this morning with wonder and awe (and two people wrote in to let me know as well) that there was a crew on top of the Medical Arts Building doing work on either the roof or the HVAC units.

I know it's crazy talk, but I saw it with my own two eyes, as I nearly ran off the Chapel Hill St. freeway on-ramp.

It's the day we've all been preparing for. Notice any people missing?

I hate to think of it, but if you saw two guys on the roof of an abandoned building, messing with the AC units....

With the rise in aluminum and copper thefts in Durham, I am hoping I am wrong.

I would love to see the Medical Arts Building rehabilitated. I like it's funky 1951 architecture for some reason!

I work right around the corner from the old Medical Arts Building.

I'll have to take a work break and see what's happening.

I saw a rain of frogs in my backyard a few minutes ago, and I heard tell of a plague of bail bondsmen downtown!

I'm wrong about the suspicion of metal theft.

I walked over just now and saw five guys doing roof repair with tar and roller.

Four vehicles parked out front, but no identifiable work contractor vehicles.

Building still boarded at the front doors, they used ladders to go directly to the roof.

I was going to shout up and ask questions but there was just too much noise from their compressor to talk.

I noticed the dumpsters at the north end of the building are all very full this evening. Of course that might be their normal state.

I saw this as I was biking through, and I nearly ran off the road rubbernecking.

At first I thought they were salvaging the HVAC units in preparation for tearing the thing down - I'm shocked that they're actually repairing the roof. I wonder what use this building could be put to?

A big meth lab? McKissick election HQ? A hidden lair for UDI to plot its attack against Durham architecture/preservation?

I just drove by, and saw the roofing workers exiting the building via the front door... aand the full dumpster. But, nothing new.

I drove by yesterday and see that Mr. Fields has placed (who knows if it is for a fee or not) a huge Fred Smith for Governor sign. Nothing could be more appropriate for a boarded up, derelict building that has become a black eye on Durham than a political sign for the "God & Country" candidate Smith. Perhaps Lee Greenwood can stage another of his "God Bless the USA" concerts for Fred Smith in the parking lot. The backdrop represents the contribution and progress of the small business owner...the backbone of our American economy. Thanks Bill for reminding us that we too can show the world that with a little greed, and a total disregard for our community, that your not so unique version of capitalism is alive and well....

Sincerely,

"Why? Because We Love You" Durham
