Google Map Geek Durham Excitement

I'm surely not the first person to notice this, but Google appears to have very recently updated their satellite imagery of Durham in Google Maps. The imagery had, until quite recently, been ~3 years old. The current imagery appears to have been taken in July (2010.) Enjoy exploring, fellow map fans...

It appears to be around the time of the Eno Festival. No booths there, but the big top tent is up.

The community message board we put up around June 19th in Oakwood Park shows up on the maps.

Also, the pile of trash one of the slumlords put in their front yard (that is still there) also shows up.

Now, when will they update the Street View photos? The ones in my neighborhood are from sometime in the early part of the summer of 2007 -- more than 3 years out of date.

It looks like it came by on a Monday or Tuesday, because my garbage bins are out -- all three of them, including the Yard Waste bin that they didn't pick up because I didn't have a Yard Waste paid for sticker. My neighbors later gave me the skinny on the system. I felt like a dope and now I'm going to be reminded of that until Google flies by again. My next door neighbor's boyfriend's truck is home, so I hope they don't ever split up!

One important change for my block is that my next door neighbor's house had not yet been built during the previous fly by. Now the satellite actually looks right. Though of course I prefer Bing Maps' birds eye view. When will -they- update to get my neighbor's house on the map? I wonder.

According to timeline feature in Google Earth, the new satellite photos were taken on July 5th.

I really love the timeline feature. It goes all the way back to 1992/1993 for this area. Lots of changes since then!

Ooh, I can see my new roof!

How do you access the timeline feature?

One thing I notice on Google Earth...the Durham Freeway through downtown looks like it's in horrible shape. Is it as bad as I think it looks? Or is that how a concrete highway is supposed to look? I see how it switches back down here between MM 7 and MM 8.
