An American Oil Company (AMOCO) Bulk Oil and gasoline wholesale plant / warehouse was established between the Norfolk and Western railroad spur and Washington St. prior to 1937. In 1945, operation of the plant was taken over by the Erwin Oil Company, which continues to operate it today.

There is a totally awesome railroad trestle spur to the immediate north of this building. Perhaps for oil deliveries?
This morning, I took a look at the trestle mentioned by Anon. I was thinking that if Durham ever manages to buy the Beltline right-of-way from the railroad and build a multi-use trail up there, maybe we could use the trestle as an alternate entry point.
While I was standing in the parking lot snapping a couple of pics of it, a guy came walking out the trestle, climbed down an iron ladder that's mostly hidden by brush and trees, and continued on his way toward downtown.
After he walked past me, he looked back at me quizically, like I was doing something kind of odd by standing there looking at the trestle... which I guess is true!
