History 2.0 : Open Durham

Open Durham is the next phase of the award winning Durham, NC-based geographic/architectural history website Endangered Durham. The vision is for a far more functional platform for the content of Endangered Durham - one with integrated mapping, rich categories for easy search and reference, short views for the quick info and longer views for the more extensive read. Organized like an archive with rich search functionality at the forefront. But the vision for Open Durham goes beyond a better Endangered Durham.

Please make a tax-deductible donation now by clicking the "Donate" button in the sidebar. Click here to read more about what Open Durham will look like, and how you can help bring it to fruition

Thanks for your good work and looking forward to the new format. But for now: where/what about the picture with people hanging out the windows? Old bank building on Main & Corcoran Sts. - can't remember name - Fidelity? Parade? (Note windows are open - no A/C!}

Indeed, it is the Fidelity Bank Building at Main and Corcoran, otherwise known as the Geer Building. If we were on the new platform, that would have been easy to find!

Don't know the parade; that's the whole shot.

Gary,

This sounds very exciting, but I'm having trouble visualizing what you're going for. Do you have any examples of websites that were inspirations?

Not exactly, because nobody is doing exactly what I'm looking for; the map and search are the central navigation of the site - I'm inspired by www.barebonesdetroit.com for the map, although the pre-alpha has more boxes/options to type in for search, and it isn't nearly as slick. The information is more in-depth, although each building has an 'index card' view (summary view) with thumbnails much like BBD.

Should have a browsable alpha version in a few weeks, hopefully. It will take awhile to get up to full speed, but hopefully the promise will be clear.

Hi Gary,

I'd be interested in helping out with this. (I'm behind on my reading and only just now saw this notice.)

Since 2005, I've been running a free, no-advertising, open-access wiki-based community reference site called HTYP. I've always thought ED could benefit from the sort of cross-referencing and crowdsourcing that the wiki format facilitates, and might even be ripe for more advanced tools such as semantic markup (HTYP has the Semantic Mediawiki extension installed; I'm still learning what it can do, but I can ramble at some length about how it could be used here).

Have you got a team working on any of the technical aspects of this problem yet? How can I get in touch with them? Thanks.
