424 WEST LAKEWOOD AVENUE

424 Lakewood Ave., 05.08.11

I've always loved this little building, and I've never been able to figure out whether it's occupied or not - at least without going up and knocking on the door, which I haven't done.

I didn't do extensive city directory research, but in 1960, "Mann's Market - grocery" is listed here.

Find this spot on a Google Map.

Evidence of "Mann's Market" can still be seen in what looks like old neon sign wiring on the side.

And is that the word "SPACE" written backwards in the window?

It was for sale by my former office about 10 yrs ago. A leaky roof had led to severe interior damage. There is a basement in this building and many of the floor joists were damaged. I did see someone working on it shortly after I saw it. It needed lots of attention.

Didn't that use to be one of those places where various applicances under warranty could be taken. Seems I remember going there a couple of times for repair and parts.

I thought someone was living in it. I used to go past there quite often and used to see a guy coming in and out. I assumed he was living there because I never saw any evidence of toolsl

I admire this little building every time I drive by it, which is about once a week. In the last 2 weeks I noticed a couple of men coming in and out, so maybe it's being fixed up? They had a pickup truck with various tools and ladders.

I love that little window, hope it stays :)

Hey Now!

I'm Blake Pepper @ 294-8080,
109 Hunt St, Durham, NC 27701
and I own this Diamond in the Ruff.
Problem is, I've been being extorted by Adrian Mausilla, the adjacent out of town, 502 Lakewood property owner, which includes land, Every Single Tree (Lorax) up to the first brick house on Duke, and the old porn bldg.

I'm the guy coming and going and I'd love to give anyone a tour, becasue its going to take a village to get Adrian Mausilla out of Durham for good. Please Help...

Call me for a tour and a spcial history of what Iv'e learned hanging around that goofy intersection for the past 7 years

I drive past this building every morning, and it looks like there's some renovation going on here. Blake, can you confirm? I'd love to see a new restaurant / beer garden in this space!
